Grass cutting

A lawn looks after itself if it is cut often enough. Leave it three weeks in May and you are not cutting grass any more, you are making hay.

Best timeMarch to November

I cut to a height that suits the lawn rather than scalping it, strim the edges the mower cannot reach, and blow the paths and the patio clear before I go. Most gardens want me weekly from April to June and every couple of weeks after that, down to a last cut somewhere in November.

If a lawn has been left a while, the first visit is usually two stages: take the top off, give it a few days to recover, then bring it down to a normal height. Dropping a long lawn straight to two centimetres turns it yellow and it sulks for a month.

Tell me roughly how often you want me and I will put you on a round, so you are not chasing me every fortnight. If you would rather book cut by cut, that is fine too.

Questions people ask

How often does grass actually need cutting?
Weekly from April to June, when it grows fastest, then every two weeks as it slows. The last cut is usually somewhere in November. It stops growing over the winter, so the mower goes away until about March.
Do I need to be in when you come?
No, as long as I can reach the back garden. Plenty of my regulars are at work when I turn up and only ever see the finished lawn.
My lawn is knee high. Is that a problem?
Not at all, it is a common enough starting point. It takes longer than a normal cut and it is usually better done in two stages, so send me a photo and I will tell you what is involved before I come.
